Getting Started

Does this work on iPhone and Android?
Yes! Our 0 to 60 timer works on both iPhone (iOS 13+) and Android (8.0+). Any modern smartphone with GPS, accelerometer, and gyroscope will work. Most phones from 2017 or newer are fully compatible.
Is it really free?
Yes, completely free. No subscriptions, no in-app purchases, no hidden fees. We don't even require an account. Just visit the site and start tracking.
Do I need to download an app?
No download required! This is a web app that runs directly in your browser. Just visit the site on your phone and you're ready to go. You can also add it to your home screen for quick access.
Do I need an internet connection?
You need internet to initially load the app, but after that, it works offline. GPS doesn't require internet—it receives signals directly from satellites. Once loaded, you can use it anywhere with GPS signal.

Permissions & Privacy

What permissions do I need to grant?
You need to allow two permissions:
  • Location (GPS): Required to measure your speed and distance
  • Motion & Orientation: Required to access accelerometer and gyroscope data
We only use these to measure your speed and acceleration—we don't track or store your location.
Do you track my location or store my data?
No. All processing happens locally on your device. We don't send your location, speed data, or any personal information to our servers. Your runs are stored only in your browser's local storage on your device.
How do I enable permissions on iPhone?
When you first use the app, Safari will ask for permissions. Tap "Allow" for both Location and Motion & Orientation. If you accidentally denied them, go to Settings → Safari → Location → select "Ask" or "Allow", then reload the page.
How do I enable permissions on Android?
Chrome will prompt for location permission when you first use the app. Tap "Allow". If you need to change it later, tap the lock icon in the address bar → Permissions → Location → Allow. Motion sensors are typically enabled by default on Android.

Using the Timer

How do I mount my phone in the car?
Use a secure dashboard or windshield mount. The phone must not move during acceleration. Avoid cup holders, loose mounts, or holding it by hand. Any phone movement will affect accuracy. Make sure the mount is tight and the phone is firmly secured.
Why do I need to wait for GPS signal?
When you first open the app or haven't used GPS recently, your phone needs time to acquire satellite locks. This "cold start" can take 30-60 seconds. Wait until the app shows a strong GPS signal before starting your run for best accuracy.
Can I use this on a track or drag strip?
Yes! Tracks and drag strips are ideal locations. They provide straight paths, clear GPS signal, and safe, controlled environments. This is where you'll get the most accurate and consistent results.
Can I save my runs?
Yes. The app automatically saves your runs in your browser's local storage. You can view your run history and see your best times. Data persists until you clear your browser data.

Accuracy & Performance

How accurate is it compared to professional timing equipment?
Under good conditions, our timer is typically within ±0.2-0.5 seconds of professional equipment. While not as precise as $500+ systems, it's accurate enough for personal performance tracking, comparing modifications, and general benchmarking. See our Accuracy page for detailed information.
Why are my times slower than the manufacturer's specs?
Manufacturer times are achieved under ideal conditions with professional drivers, optimal weather, prepared surfaces, and sometimes with performance-enhancing options. Real-world results are typically 0.3-1.0 seconds slower. Factors like driver skill, tire condition, fuel load, altitude, and temperature all affect performance.
My times vary between runs. Is something wrong?
Some variation is normal. Even with professional equipment, expect 0.1-0.3 second differences between runs due to driver technique, tire temperature, and environmental factors. If variation exceeds 0.5 seconds, check your GPS signal strength and phone mounting. Perform multiple runs and average the results for best accuracy.
Does weather affect accuracy?
Yes. Heavy rain, storms, or atmospheric interference can degrade GPS signal quality. Clear weather provides the most consistent results. Temperature and humidity also affect your car's performance, not just the timer.

Troubleshooting

The app says "GPS signal weak" - what should I do?
  • Move to an open area with clear sky view
  • Wait 30-60 seconds for GPS to acquire satellites
  • Avoid areas with tall buildings, heavy tree cover, or tunnels
  • Make sure location permissions are enabled
  • Try restarting your phone if GPS won't connect
The timer isn't starting when I accelerate
Make sure you've pressed "Start Run" in the app first. The timer begins automatically when it detects movement above 2-3 mph. If it still doesn't work, check that location permissions are enabled and you have a strong GPS signal.
Speed readings seem inaccurate or jumpy
This usually indicates weak GPS signal. Move to an area with better sky view. Also ensure your phone is securely mounted and not moving. Phone movement can cause erratic readings.
My saved runs disappeared
Runs are stored in your browser's local storage. If you cleared your browser data, switched browsers, or used incognito/private mode, your runs will be lost. Make sure to use the same browser and don't clear site data if you want to keep your history.
The app won't load or keeps crashing
Try these steps:
  • Refresh the page
  • Clear your browser cache
  • Make sure you're using a modern browser (Safari on iOS, Chrome on Android)
  • Update your phone's operating system
  • Close other apps to free up memory

Safety & Legal

Is it safe to use this while driving?
Performance testing should only be done in controlled, safe environments by experienced drivers. We recommend closed courses, drag strips, or private property with permission. Never test on public roads with traffic. Mount your phone securely before driving and don't interact with it during acceleration.
Is this legal to use?
The app itself is legal. However, high-speed acceleration testing may be illegal on public roads depending on your location. Always follow local traffic laws and test only in appropriate locations. We are not responsible for how you use this tool.
